Ireland's expanding role in GLP-1 manufacturing is creating demand for specialist production expertise, with the National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training (NIBRT) developing dedicated training to address the sector's emerging workforce requirements.

NIBRT has introduced a new course covering chemical and biosynthetic production routes for peptide-based therapies, alongside quality, regulatory and supply chain considerations. The programme responds to growing demand for engineers and technical professionals with the skills required to manufacture GLP-1 receptor agonists as pharmaceutical companies expand capacity for diabetes, obesity and related therapies. GEN News reports that the course was developed in response to expectations for substantial global growth in GLP-1 therapies.

The strategic significance for Ireland rests on the country's established pharmaceutical manufacturing base and growing involvement in GLP-1 production. NIBRT has highlighted Eli Lilly's Kinsale manufacturing campus as part of Ireland's contribution to global GLP-1 supply, while Novo Nordisk's plans to manufacture an oral version of Wegovy at its Athlone campus further strengthen the country's position. For NIBRT, developing specialist training alongside these investments positions Ireland to address one of the less visible constraints on future manufacturing expansion: access to appropriately trained personnel.

The manufacturing requirements also extend beyond conventional biopharmaceutical production. GLP-1 therapies can involve chemical peptide synthesis, recombinant technologies, chromatography, filtration, formulation and fill-finish operations, creating demand for expertise across multiple manufacturing disciplines. As new facilities are developed and existing sites are adapted to accommodate additional production, workforce capability will become increasingly important to maintaining GMP compliance, process consistency and operational efficiency.

For manufacturers, the pressure is also likely to increase around automation and digitalisation. Automated peptide synthesis and real-time process monitoring are already important to commercial production, while AI could increasingly support process optimisation, continuous manufacturing, digital twins, automated quality monitoring and predictive maintenance. This creates a broader skills requirement in which production expertise increasingly overlaps with automation, data and digital manufacturing capabilities.

For the sector, the lesson is clear: GLP-1 manufacturing expansion requires more than new facilities and production lines. The companies and manufacturing locations able to develop specialist skills alongside physical capacity will be better positioned to scale production, maintain quality and compete for future advanced therapy manufacturing mandates.
