Ireland’s pharmaceutical and biotechnology sector is undergoing a decisive digital transformation, employing around 8,200 technology professionals in 2024, representing 26% of its workforce. By 2030, this number is projected to reach 12,400, growing at 7.1% annually, well above the broader Irish technology sector’s 4.2% growth rate, reflecting strong adoption of digital tools in drug discovery, clinical trials, and regulatory compliance.
The sector’s tech workforce is concentrated in four clusters: engineering and platform roles (42%), data and AI specialists (31%), cybersecurity and risk technology (16%), and product and experience roles (11%). Key growth drivers include AI-driven drug discovery, regulatory system modernisation, and open data initiatives, supported by global frameworks such as the European Medicines Agency’s Digital Transformation Roadmap and the U.S. FDA’s Technology Modernisation Plan.
Rising talent demand has outpaced supply, creating a shortfall of 800–1,200 skilled professionals. Roles in bioinformatics, regulatory technology, and data science often face extended hiring cycles of 4–6 months. Salary premiums are notable, with data engineers earning $95,000, QA automation leads $105,000, and regulatory systems analysts $85,000, particularly in Dublin, which offers 20–30% higher compensation than regional hubs.
By 2030, emerging roles will include AI governance officers, regulatory automation specialists, sustainable bioprocess engineers, digital therapeutics product managers, and biodata privacy officers. Automation is reshaping operations, with up to 70% of repetitive tasks now automatable, while creating augmented analytical and supervisory positions that boost productivity by 20–35%.
Ireland hosts over 700 life sciences and biotech firms, including global multinationals such as Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson, and Roche, alongside growing indigenous companies like Sigmoid Pharma and Malin Corporation.
