Meiji Seika Pharma Co., Ltd. has made a strategic equity investment in Lyric Bio, Inc., a U.S.-based biotechnology company, aiming to accelerate early-stage development of Lyric Bio’s innovative platform for producing human immunoglobulin (IVIg). The collaboration seeks to explore donation-independent manufacturing methods and build a more resilient, high-quality supply of plasma-derived therapeutics to meet rising global demand.
Lyric Bio is pioneering a next-generation biomanufacturing platform using tissue-mimicking bioreactors on a proprietary laser-printed cellular substrate. This approach enables ultra high-density cell growth and has the potential to generate more than 1,000 IVIg doses from a single donor, representing a transformative step in cost-effective and scalable production.
The investment will support Lyric Bio’s ongoing research and development activities and implementation of its IVIg manufacturing platform, strengthening the cooperative relationship between the two companies. Kayj Shannon, CEO of Lyric Bio, emphasised the potential impact: “Their deep expertise and support will be instrumental in helping us lower costs, broaden access, and decrease dependence on human donors.”
Toshiaki Nagasato, President and Representative Director of Meiji Seika Pharma, highlighted the strategic value of the partnership: “Lyric Bio’s manufacturing platform for IVIg production is truly groundbreaking technology and has the potential to overcome current challenges in the IVIg business.”
This investment reflects Meiji Seika Pharma’s commitment to innovative solutions in plasma-derived therapeutics and positions the company at the forefront of a shift toward sustainable, high-volume IVIg production. The collaboration underscores the growing importance of advanced biomanufacturing platforms in addressing global healthcare needs while improving efficiency and patient access to critical treatments.
