Alexion, AstraZeneca Rare Disease has launched a new research and operations hub in Cork, underscoring its long-term commitment to Ireland’s life sciences ecosystem. Building on established sites in Dublin and Athlone, the Cork base highlights the country’s role as a cornerstone in the company’s global network.

The hub will focus on senior technical functions in manufacturing, supply chain, quality, and technical operations, while also deepening collaboration with Munster’s strong academic community. With around 1,400 employees already working across its Irish operations, Alexion is strengthening its position as a driver of innovation and supply for rare disease therapies.

Shane Doyle, Senior Vice President, Global Operations and Sustainability at Alexion, said Ireland’s combination of talent, infrastructure, and supportive business environment makes it integral to the company’s mission. He emphasised that partnerships in Ireland enhance specialist capabilities, enabling the delivery of life-changing medicines to patients worldwide.

Sylvia Kiely, VP Global Supply Chain and Product Strategy Lead, added that Cork’s convergence of expertise and academic excellence offers opportunities to nurture future talent while advancing scientific solutions.

IDA Ireland CEO Michael Lohan welcomed the expansion, noting that it reflects both Cork’s and Ireland’s growing reputation as global life sciences hubs capable of attracting strategic investment.

The initiative also reinforces Ireland’s role in shaping sustainable solutions for rare disease patients, at a time when demand for innovation and global access is accelerating. By combining technical depth with collaborative partnerships, Alexion aims to position Cork at the forefront of specialist rare disease research and supply chain excellence.
