Ireland's UL and Edwards Lifesciences formalise strategic innovation partnership
The University of Limerick (UL) and Edwards Lifesciences have formalised a long-standing collaboration through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), aimed at advancing medical device innovation and talent development in Ireland.
The agreement outlines collaboration across research initiatives, joint projects, and educational programmes, while supporting Edwards Lifesciences’ establishment of a new Process Automation team in Ireland. The partnership builds on an existing talent pipeline, with many Edwards engineers in Ireland having graduated from UL, and expands opportunities for continuous learning and workforce development.
Joe Nuzzolese, Corporate VP of Global Supply Chain and Quality at Edwards Lifesciences, emphasised the shared commitment to innovation and education, noting the company’s focus on enhancing manufacturing processes in collaboration with UL. Professor Kenneth Stanton, Executive Dean of UL’s Faculty of Science and Engineering, highlighted the potential for transformative research and graduate opportunities arising from the strategic alliance.
The collaboration also strengthens ties with UL’s Bernal Institute, leveraging expertise for research support and problem-solving. By combining academic insight with industry know-how, the MOU is expected to create long-term value for students, patients, and the broader medical technology community in Ireland.
The signing ceremony, held at Plassey House, reflected the positive intent from both sides, underscoring a commitment to nurturing a dynamic ecosystem of innovation and talent development for years to come.
